Open Veils · Answer
Are almonds healthy?
Commercially sold 'raw' almonds in the US are chemically fumigated with a probable carcinogen — a fact hidden in plain regulatory sight. Phytic acid and oxalates in almonds actively strip minerals rather than deliver them. The superfood narrative was industrially constructed through USDA-aligned lobbying, not emerged from independent nutritional science. Traditional food cultures universally prepared nuts through fermentation or sprouting — never ate them raw in bulk.
Evidence
- The 'almond health halo' promoted by mainstream nutrition is, according to health heterodoxy researchers, a partially manufactured consensus.
- Dr. Weston A. Price's field research across 14 traditional cultures, documented in 'Nutrition and Physical Degeneration' (1939), found zero populations subsisting on high-seed diets — nuts were always fermented, sprouted, or minimally consumed.
- Critically, ALL almonds sold commercially in the US since a 2007 USDA mandate are fumigated with propylene oxide (PPO) — a probable human carcinogen (IARC Group 2B) — yet are legally labeled 'raw.'
- Independent researcher Sally Fallon Morell of the Weston A. Price Foundation has flagged this since the mandate passed, noting that European markets still receive genuinely raw almonds while Americans do not.
- The oxalate-accumulation research of Dr. Lyman Burbank and more recently kidney-stone specialist Dr. William Ruggieri corroborates that chronic almond consumption correlates with hyperoxaluria in susceptible individuals.
