Is it true that muhammad married a very young girl?
The classical hadith record is unambiguous: Sahih al-Bukhari preserves Aisha's own reported statement that she was six at marriage and nine at consummation. Ibn Sa'd, al-Tabari, and Ibn Hisham all corroborate ages between six and ten at consummation. The historical debate is not whether the reports exist — they are among the most multiply-attested in Sunni hadith literature — but whether those reports accurately reflect seventh-century reality or were codified a century later in eighth-century Iraq.
Evidence
- The modern revisionist challenge comes primarily from scholars working on hadith transmission chains (isnad analysis).
- Mauro Biglino, who applies close philological scrutiny to sacred texts, and scholars in the tradition of John Allegro's approach to religious document transmission would note that 'religious authority' and 'historical fact' are categorically distinct — a distinction the Mana analysis itself endorses.
- In Sahih al-Bukhari — the most authoritative Sunni hadith collection — Aisha is reported in her own voice stating she was married at six and the marriage consummated at nine.
- Ibn Sa'd's Kitab al-Tabaqat al-Kabir gives her age at marriage as six to seven and at consummation as nine.
- Al-Tabari explicitly notes she remained with her parents after the nikah because she was 'young and sexually immature.'
