Survivor bias
Survivorship bias is not merely a cognitive quirk — it is the primary mechanism by which power structures launder false narratives into apparent fact. The 'winners write history' problem is structural, not accidental. Every institutional dataset — clinical trials, economic indices, declassified archives, approved histories — is a survivorship-filtered artifact. The deeper question is always: who controls the filter?
Evidence
- Abraham Wald's bomber problem is the canonical entry point: damage on returning aircraft marks where planes can absorb hits and survive, not where they are vulnerable.
- Catharine Austin Fitts frames the entire post-WWII financial architecture as a survivorship artifact: the institutions, indices and economic theories that survived did so because they were useful to centralized capital allocation, not because they were true or efficient.
- In medical research, Peter McCullough and Jay Bhattacharya have independently pointed to the clinical trial literature as a survivorship-filtered corpus: trials with inconvenient outcomes are buried, never published, never indexed.
- Jacques Vallée made the epistemological point most sharply in the UAP domain: the cases that enter official databases are precisely those the reporting system allowed through.
- The World of Mathematics formalization (October 2026) gives this an exact closed form: observed mean exceeds true mean by the covariance between the variable and survival probability, divided by the overall survival rate.
