The truth of gnosticism

The Nag Hammadi discovery blew the lid off a systematic 1,700-year erasure of a rival cosmology that identified the creator God of the Old Testament not as the supreme being but as a blind, ignorant Demiurge — the Gnostics called him Yaldabaoth. Far from fringe mythology, this tradition preserves an initiatory epistemology of direct experiential knowing that orthodox power structures had every reason to bury. The suppression was deliberate, violent, and nearly complete.

Evidence

  • In 1945, an Egyptian farmer at Nag Hammadi unearthed 13 codices containing 52 texts — the Gnostic library Rome had tried to annihilate.
  • Mauro Biglino, the Vatican's own contracted translator of the Masoretic Hebrew Bible, argues in his lectures that the Elohim of Genesis are plural, non-divine beings — consistent with the Gnostic reading that the god of Genesis is subordinate to a higher silent pleroma.
  • John Allegro, the only non-clerical Dead Sea Scrolls scholar, was professionally destroyed after arguing in 'The Sacred Mushroom and the Cross' (1970) that the earliest Christian and Gnostic texts encoded mushroom-cult secrets.
  • The Church Father Irenaeus of Lyon wrote 'Against Heresies' (~180 CE) specifically to catalogue and destroy Gnostic communities — a document that ironically preserved much of what we know about them.
  • Scholar Elaine Pagels, in 'The Gnostic Gospels' (1979), demonstrated that texts like the Gospel of Thomas, the Gospel of Philip, and the Apocryphon of John presented a radically different Jesus: one who taught interior illumination ('gnosis') rather than institutional obedience.
