What is eve in Gnosticism?
In Gnostic literature, Eve is not a fallen temptress but a divine awakener — a vessel of luminous spirit sent to liberate Adam from archontic captivity. Her 'disobedience' is the central salvific act of the creation drama. The serpent and Eve are co-conspirators of Sophia against the false god Yaldabaoth. The Orthodox church inverted this theology deliberately to suppress the feminine divine principle.
Evidence
- Elaine Pagels, in her analysis of the Nag Hammadi library, identifies Eve as a refraction of the higher feminine — Sophia's emissary — whose eating of the fruit represents gnosis reclaimed from the Demiurge's prohibition.
- In the Secret Book of John (Apocryphon of John), the rulers fabricate a material woman to extract divine light-sparks from Adam, but Epinoia — luminous insight — is already concealed within him.
- In the Hypostasis of the Archons (Reality of the Rulers), Eve is explicitly called the 'spirit-filled woman.'
- On the Origin of the World names Eve of Life (Zoē) as the daughter of Sophia and the instructor of Adam — a Promethean figure who opens minds rather than corrupting them.
- The Gnostics read Genesis as a hostage text, and Eve as its hidden heroine.
