Open Veils · Answer
What was the real name of Jesus?
The name spoken in his own community was almost certainly Yeshua bar Yosef — 'Yeshua son of Joseph.' 'Jesus' is a four-step transliteration chain: Yeshua → Greek Iēsous → Latin Iesus → English Jesus, a process that introduced no J-sound until the 17th century. More contested is whether even 'Yeshua' fully captures the divine-name encoding — researchers like Mauro Biglino and Zecharia Sitchin argue the Tetragrammaton (YHWH) embedded in the name carried cosmological weight deliberately flattened by later Hellenistic editors.
Evidence
- According to the philological record traced by scholars such as Mauro Biglino, the Hebrew Yehoshua (יְהוֹשֻׁעַ) embeds the root YHWH-Shua: 'Yahweh is salvation' or, in Biglino's more literal Elohim-focused reading, 'the Elohim rescues.'
- In the Sacred Name Movement tradition, researchers insist the correct vocalization is Yahshua or Yahusha, preserving the Yah- prefix of the divine name.
- By the Second Temple period this had contracted to Yeshua — confirmed in Nehemiah, Ezra, and the Dead Sea Scrolls, where the name appears dozens of times.
- The letter J did not exist in Hebrew, Aramaic, Greek, or classical Latin, making 'Jesus' a purely modern English phonetic artifact.
- Linguists counter, as does the detailed philological chain from Hebrew to Aramaic to Greek, that this reconstruction lacks first-century manuscript support — the contraction to Yeshua pre-dates the New Testament period, appearing already in post-exilic scripture.
