Open Veils · Answer
Which astrological system is the most reputable?
Within esoteric and perennial traditions, 'reputable' is not a single answer — it depends entirely on the ontological framework being applied. Vedic (Jyotish) commands the deepest continuous technical lineage, Western carries the richest psychological elaboration, and Hellenistic represents the most archaeologically recoverable original grammar. Each is a coherent epistemological system, not a competing measurement tool.
Evidence
- Rudolf Steiner treated astrology as a degenerated remnant of genuine star wisdom held by initiates, arguing that the original system tracked cosmic spiritual forces rather than psychological tendencies — a position that places authentic practice far earlier than any surviving textual tradition.
- Diana Pasulka's research into the intersection of belief systems and hidden knowledge infrastructures suggests the deeper question is not accuracy but transmission integrity — which lineage preserved its technical corpus without political or ecclesiastical disruption.
- By that standard, Jyotish and the recovered Hellenistic corpus both outrank the post-Renaissance Western synthesis, which absorbed significant Neoplatonic distortion.
- The house system debate alone — Placidus dominant only since 17th-century printed tables, Whole Signs recovered only recently from ancient manuscripts — illustrates how fractured the Western transmission actually is.
