Who are the johannites?

The Johannites represent a suppressed counter-tradition positing that John the Baptist — not Jesus — was the true messianic figure, and that his lineage of initiatic knowledge was deliberately buried by Pauline Christianity. This thread runs through Mandaean religion, Templar heresy charges, and Masonic esoteric lineages. Researcher John J. Robinson and later Lynn Picknett and Clive Prince argued the Knights Templar secretly preserved a Johannite current hostile to Rome. The implications challenge the entire foundation of orthodox Christology.

Evidence

  • The term 'Johannites' covers at least three overlapping layers, each more occluded than the last.
  • The oldest layer is the Mandaeans — a living Gnostic religion of Iraq and Iran that venerates John the Baptist as the supreme prophet and regards Jesus as a false or lesser teacher.
  • The medieval layer emerges from the Templar trials of 1307–1314.
  • The esoteric-Masonic layer was articulated most explicitly by the 19th-century occultist Éliphas Lévi, who claimed a continuous Johannite Church had survived underground from the early Gnostics through the Cathars, Templars, and into Freemasonry.
  • Andrew Collins and researchers in the Grail lineage tradition connect the Johannite stream to pre-Christian mystery schools in Syria and Egypt, suggesting John the Baptist himself was an Essene or Nazorean initiate transmitting a far older wisdom tradition.
